Issue of the medal « 10 years of the Euro – The Friends of the Euro »


On January the 1st, 1999, the Euro became the currency of eleven countries, when the parities were "irrevocably" chosen: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, Portugal, Spain and The Netherlands. Greece joined these eleven countries two years later.

On January the 1st, 2009, the Euro celebrates its 10 years. Ten years of single currency. In order to commemorate this event, all the euro area countries (even those which joined it recently) will issue a €2 commemorative coin whose design was chosen by a public online voting at the beginning of 2008.

The only difference between the sixteen coins issued by the sixteen countries of the Euro zone will be the name of the issuing country at the top of the coin (and the mint mark for the German coins).

The Friends of the Euro society doesn't fail to commemorate this anniversary by issuing its own medal. Created by Fabrizio Annovi (alias Frizio), it was minted by the Monnaie de Paris and issued on the 1st of January 2009 at only 5 000 units.

It is sold at a €2 price, with priority to the society's members, and till the exhaustion of the stocks to the different societies and professionals which contacted The Friends of the Euro soon enough.

Reservation methods

- For The Friends of the Euro members: Consolidated order (until the 9th of January), limited to 20 medals per member. The members have priority on all other external order.

- For numismatic societies or societies interessed in touristic medals: thanks to send your order to president@amisdeleuro.org from today on. The definitive order will be confirmed by the end of December 2008 or beginning January 2009.

- For professional sellers: thanks to send your orders (at least 50 units) to president@amisdeleuro.org from today on. Your definitive order will be confirmed by the end of December 2008 or beginning January 2009..

- For people who don't want to join the society and who are not members of another numismatic association : at the medal dispenser located at the Monnaie de Paris building (from February 2009 on while stocks last)
